Welcome back – The Collection Returns

9.5.2026–10.1.2027

Following a tour of Europe lasting two years, the Impressionist collection has returned to the Langmatt. For the first time in its history, it has now been exhibited outside of Baden. During the renovation of the museum from 2024 to 2026, significant European art institutions exhibited this collection of around 50 French Impressionist paintings, supplemented by a number of other pictures. More than 302,000 visitors to the Fondation de l’Hermitage Lausanne, the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud of Cologne and the Belvedere, Vienna, gave the collection an enthusiastic reception. The collection’s international standing was confirmed by the strength of the media response.

The exhibition Welcome Back presents the Impressionist collection in the context of other areas of Jenny and Sidney Brown’s collecting activities. This exhibition begins by displaying the 18th and 19th century in the first rooms, with the library and the painting gallery serving as the dramatic high point: All of the significant Impressionist artworks are assembled there, but alongside them are images created by other artists, lending an incomparable collection a personal character. The paintings are displayed in a new arrangement and under the same lighting as in the Browns’ day. The carefully renovated rooms and restored period furniture, carpets and crystal chandeliers all contribute to the exhibition’s unique atmosphere.
