In 2026, the Raumfahrt (Space Travel) exhibition series will also resume; since 2017, this series has showcased young Swiss contemporary art in the museum’s basement rooms. In 2026, a new space will be added: the adjacent drying room will now serve as an exhibition venue, replacing the former laundry room, which will once again be used as an art education studio. It was refurbished as part of a comprehensive renovation project to showcase contemporary art and features a historic air circulation system for drying laundry.
The eighth edition of Raumfahrt (Space Travel) presents three artistic practices that explore intimacy, featuring Nefeli Chrysa Avgeris (born 1993, Basel), Paula Santomé (born 1994, Spain) and Sina Schöpf (born 1994, Bern). A fundamental human need that is both more prevalent and, at the same time, more elusive in a digitalised, individualised society. More and more is being shared via digital channels, with private matters moving into a (semi-)public space. This elicits a range of reactions: a longing for seclusion, criticism of the loss of physical presence, new forms of relationship and notions of closeness. The exhibition shows how intimacy is experienced, negotiated and expressed in diverse ways today – as something multifaceted, fragile and profoundly human.
