The Langmatt Museum is presenting the first institutional solo exhibition in Switzerland by Berlin-based French artist Emmanuelle Castellan (born 1976 in Aurillac). For more than 25 years, she has been working in the fields of painting and drawing, often creating site-specific painterly installations. After serving as a professor of painting at the Institut Supérieur des Arts de Toulouse from 2012 to 2019, Emmanuelle Castellan has been teaching as a professor of painting and drawing at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin in Strasbourg since 2019.
Her paintings strike a dreamlike balance between figuration and abstraction. People, faces, interiors, and vases appear sketchy, fragile, and translucent – as if in a dream world, far removed from the clamor and breakneck pace of our present day. Her works radiate a remarkable sense of stillness and solitude that is at times liberating, yet at other times oppressive.
The artist has already been featured in two group exhibitions at the Langmatt Museum: *Langmatt, Light, Dragonflies – Impressionism Yesterday and Today* (2016) and *Best Regards* (2022). In her solo exhibition, she will primarily showcase new works created specifically for the Langmatt.
