Mark Wallinger

Mark Wallinger (* 1959 in Chigwell, lives in London) is considered one of the most significant present-day British artists. In 2001, he represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale. In 2007, he received the Turner Prize, one of the most important prizes for contemporary art in the world.

The Museum Langmatt exhibition will be the first time that Mark Wallinger’s large-format Action Painting-like artworks: gestural images reduced to black-and-white. Although they are so different to the French Impressionist works in the collection, here also, light and movement are the key elements of the images. Visually, these Action Paintings resemble rococo paintings and decorations. Painted by hand, these images relate intensively to the body, appearing conceptual and sensual at the same time. They have an attractively lavish baroque energy, and yet they also appear astonishingly ascetic.

The exhibition will have an accompanying publication, brought out by Hatje Cantz Verlag Berlin.
